If tomorrow was yesterday - Inland Empire

Egy kihunyóban lévő hollywoodi filmcsillag, Nikki Grace végre megkap egy áhított filmszerepet, amitől karrierje felívelését reméli. De már a forgatás első napján különös dolgok történnek, és a színészeket szorongás tölti el. Kiderül, hogy a forgatókönyv egy régi lengyel film újrafeldolgozása. Az eredeti filmet sosem mutatták be, elátkozott produkcióként emlékszik rá mindenki, melynek során a két főszereplő színészt megölték. Nikki úgy érzi, hogy saját élete egyre jobban hasonlít filmbeli szerepére, és távol eső világok egymásba csúsznak.

A fading Hollywood star, Nikki Grace finally gets the role, which is excepted to be the one to renew her carreer. But even from the first day of shooting the film, strange things start to happen which make the actors annoyed. The film turns out to be a remake of a Polish movie. The original movie was never finished and lived in people’s mind as a cursed storyboard, what is more the two lead actors were killed during the shooting. Nikki starts to feel that her life is becoming more and more familiar to her role and distant worlds slide into each other.

Később rájöttem, részletesebben azért nem foglalkozott ezzel senki, mert túl nagy fába vágta volna a fejszéjét (ahogy tette ezt számos mozisznob magazin, és -mi tagadás- most én is).

Miről is szól a film (a fentebb leírtakon kívül)? Hát…valamiről biztos.

A hangulatról. Az akaratlagosságról.

Bár az átlag néző az első negyed óra után elveszíti a fonalat, (sőt, valójában az első perctől fogva, de mivel Lynch tökéletesen ért hozzá, hogy miután a tudás illúziójába ringattuk magunkat, nemes egyszerűséggel kirántsa az észszerűség gyenge lábai alól a szőnyeget, ezt csak a film végén vesszük észre) a 172 perces filmben mindennek megvan a maga helye. Mindennek megvan a maga célja. Mindenki azt érzi, amit Lynch akar.

Rettegsz a napsütésben, megkönnyebbülsz a sötétségben, a helyszín, a hang, a látvány…mindegy. Azt érzed, amit akar, annak ellenére, amit láttat veled. Soha nem fogod megérteni.

Later on I found out why did no one take the time to write a more explained article about this movie. Because no one was able to do so. (As I am not able to do so either.) I’ve read some failed attempts in some snob movie magazines, but they were…inapropriate, let’s say.

So, what is the movie about? Well, I’m not sure…

About the atmosphere. About the power of will.

However, the average movie-watcher losts the track of the story after 15 mins (in fact, you don’t see the point from the first single minute, but Lynch is perfect at making you think that you understand everything and it doesn’t take him a second to prove the opposite), every single piece of that 172-minute-long movie has its particular order. Everything has an aim. Everyone feels like Lynch want them to do so.

You shake in fear while watching a sunny garden, you sigh in relief in a dark corner, the scene, the sounds, the visuals…it’s whatever. You will feel as he wants, it doesn’t matter what does he let you to see. You will never be able to see the big picture.

Az igazat megvallva, néhány jelenetnél a sírva röhögés környékezett, aztán ezt az érzést felváltotta, a “miért büntet a sors?” kérdéskörön való elmélkedés. Kiváltotta ezt néhány eltúlzott, “elrontott” jelenet, példának okáért az egy szűk nappaliban a “Do the locomotion” dallamára táncoló prostituáltak, és egy hatalmas ketchupfoltra való körülbelül egy perces megszakítás nélküli fókuszálás.

To be honest, some sequences brought me to the border of the feeling “I will die from laughing at this ridiculous movie” and “Oh God, why do you punish me that way?”. Just to see some examples, the dance of some prostitutes (Do the locomotion baby) in a tiny living-room, and meaningless focusing on a ketchup blur were these kind of scenes.

Utólag belegondolva, ha Lynch nem bánik oly’ bőkezűen a relaxálós jelenetekkel, a nézőközönség fele valószínűleg mély depresszióba zuhanva tántorgott volna ki a moziteremből. Mindjárt megérted, miért.

Ha kiskorodban megütöttek: felkiáltottál, mert fájt.

Ha megjutalmaztak: nevettél örömödben.

Lynch majd’ három órán keresztül jutalmaz, bánt, vigasztal és zúz össze téged. Kiérsz a világos folyosóra, aztán a mozi elé, aztán felszállsz a buszra, végül hazaérsz. És még mindig nem tudsz mit mondani. Ütöttek már meg igazán?

While remembering these cuts, finally I found them a useful way to relax. If they wouldn’t have been there, probably 75% of the audience would have come out totally depressed. Wait a second, I explain.

If someone hits you, you scream in pain.

If someone is kind to you, you smile.

Lynch takes almost 3 hours from your life, spending it with hurting, blessing, beating and crushing you. Then you stand up and reach the corridor. Then you leave the cinema, catch your bus and finally - you get home. And even then you cannot say a word. Wanna know why? Have you ever got seriously beaten up?
